IUCN key messages - BBNJ PrepCom II

IUCN has been a strong advocate for the protection of the High Seas since early 2000, through its Members and Commissions. Its involvement in the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement reflects a long-standing commitment to conserving marine biodiversity, and takes many forms and shapes including the provision of independent legal and scientific expertise, developing knowledge and resources for decision-makers as well as developing implementation programmes and initiatives on conservation in Areas Beyond National Jurisdictions. These are the key messages for PrepCom II.

Through its various efforts, IUCN plays a key convening role, bringing together key actors working on high seas, including actors, experts and practitioners at the intersection of the various components of the BBNJ Agreement and ocean governance, and will continue do so for BBNJ going forward. Some examples of ongoing efforts to operationalise and implement the Agreement are provided in the present section.
