Brief IUCN WCEL statement regarding the sixth session of the Environment Assembly

The IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law fully supports the inclusion of cooperation with MEAs in the provisional agenda.

The IUCN WCEL expresses its full support to the request for the inclusion in the provisional agenda of the sixth session of the Environment Assembly of a supplementary item, entitled "Cooperation with Multilateral Environment Agreements", as proposed by the President of United Nations Environment Assembly, Dr. Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development of the Kingdom of Morocco, on behalf of the Bureau of the United Nations Environmental Assembly.

Indeed, addressing the triple planetary crisis of pollution, climate change and biodiversity loss at the required pace and level demands a coordinated and concerted efforts that leaves no one behind.

The IUCN’s Nature 2030 Programme further provides five relevant pathways comprising of Recognize, Retain, Restore, Resource and Reconnect.

The legal community is well positioned to help drive forward such a cooperative spirit with Multilateral Environment Agreements, in a manner that is coherent, effective, efficient, ambitious, inclusive and that reflects their respective specificities.
