Mozambique: Climate Change Adaptation Project Engages Four Districts in Inhambane Province
In order to cope with the effects of climate change, the districts of Mabote, Govuro, Inhassoro and Vilankulos, in Inhambane Province, will benefit from the Community-Based Adaptation Project (CBA SCALE+) which aims to strengthen the resilience of local communities, with an emphasis on sustainable livelihoods and the preservation of ecosystems.
This is a project to be implemented over five years, with over 15 thousand people has the direct beneficiaries, is funded by the German Government, through the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) with about EUR6.7million.
The official launch ceremony for the CBA SCALE+ project took place on 4th March 2024 in Maputo and brought together members of the government and strategic partners, namely Mrs Emília Fumo, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Land and Environment (MTA), who officially launched the project; H.E. Ronald Münch, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Mozambique; Dr. Ulf Jaeckel, Head of Division of the European and International Adaptation to Climate Change at BMUV.
During the launch ceremony, the IUCN Country MOZ Country Rep, Maurício Xerinda, underscored that the project will encompass various actions, including the management of climate risks, the establishment of resilient livelihoods, and the facilitation of training and experience exchange.
The Permanent Secretary of the MTA welcomed the initiative, which involves the intervention of national and international decision-makers to promote a favorable policy by "supporting the implementation of priority activities that produce immediate livelihood benefits and at the same time reduce future risks, by providing training and technical support in the areas of sustainable agriculture, livestock farming, sustainable water management and mechanisms for storing food and seeds".
