IUCN Pakistan Donors’ Coordination group meeting: A joint path to amplify conservation efforts
The annual IUCN Pakistan Donors' Coordination Group meeting was held in Islamabad, bringing together representatives from various donor agencies, bilateral and multilateral donors, embassies, and international development partners.
The meeting provided a vital platform to present innovative project concepts to various international development partners, encouraging collaboration and gaining support for essential conservation initiatives. The key development partners included the representatives of World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (Germany), European Union, USAID Pakistan, Italian Agency for Development Cooperation and the UN Agencies.
The success of this meeting underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing global environmental challenges. The commitment and enthusiasm displayed by international development partners signal a positive step towards a more sustainable and resilient future for Pakistan's ecosystems. IUCN Pakistan is currently undertaking key projects funded by the World Bank, Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, German BMZ and Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.
The chief guest, Ms Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination (MoCC&EC), emphasised that the long-standing partnership between MoCC&EC and IUCN Pakistan has resulted in numerous collaborative projects. This partnership has been instrumental in shaping the national agenda, as well as local environmental strategies and action plans, to tackle urgent environmental challenges.
She further noted that IUCN has successfully led the consortium for independent third-party monitoring of the Ten Billion Tree Tsunami/Upscaling Green Pakistan Programme. Alongside IUCN, WWF Pakistan and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have also made valuable contributions. Pointing out that the success of this programme is a result of the collective efforts of all stakeholders, and she stated that her Ministry is looking forward to replicating this approach in the next phase of the Green Pakistan Programme.
Mr Mahmood Akhtar Cheema, Country Representative of IUCN Pakistan, presented a comprehensive overview of IUCN Pakistan, its accomplishments and ongoing initiatives, providing the audience with a deeper understanding of IUCN's work.
Concept presentations were delivered by IUCN experts, including Dr Donald Macintosh, Coastal and Marine Expert; Mr Sean Southey, Chair of the IUCN Commission on Education and Communication (CEC); Ms Farida Ibrahim, Head of the IUCN Business Engagement Unit and Dr Javed Ahmad, Senior Advisor at IUCN Pakistan.
