Promote sustainable fisheries management through developing stakeholder engagement strategies

On 8 May 2025, IUCN organised a stakeholder engagement and coordination meeting as part of the EU project “Strengthening CSO Capacity to Scale Up Sustainable Freshwater Fisheries in Cambodia”. It aimed to present the project (progress, challenges, and lessons learned), discuss project management (coordination strategies, M&E plans, financial management, and activity planning), and enhance collaboration.

Around 34 participants from government agencies and NGOs joined the meeting. They included Fisheries Action Coalition Team (FACT), Culture and Environment Preservation Association (CEPA), Trailblazer Cambodia Organization (TCO), Village Support Group (VSG), 3S Rivers Protection Network (3SPN), Fisheries Administration (FiA), FiA Cantonment (FiAC), Department of Freshwater Conservation of the Ministry of Environment, and provincial Department of Environments.

The meeting started with updates from IUCN and partners on project progress in community engagement. Participants shared challenges including limited technical capacity, delays, and difficultly accessing remote sites. The need to strengthen coordination between CSOs and government partners and apply a results-based M&E approach were emphasised. Financial reporting procedures were clarified to support smooth project implementation.

After the meeting, the participants had a clearer understanding of the project status, coordination strategies, and financial and M&E frameworks. This experience fostered stronger collaboration among CSO and government stakeholders.

There was agreement on the need to establish robust stakeholder engagement strategies to ensure sustainable fisheries management. Next steps are to strengthen communications among partners, build technical capacity, and accelerate implementation in the targeted community fisheries.
