Mozambique Advances in Dialogue to Align Public Policies KM-GBF

As part of Phase II of the BIODEV2030 project, a multistakeholder workshop was held in Maputo on 23 July 2025 to discuss potential reforms aimed at aligning Sectoral Public Policy Instruments (SPPIs) with biodiversity conservation. The event marked a key step in an ongoing dialogue process designed to foster consensus around political and legal solutions that enable production practices with positive impacts on nature.

The workshop brought together representatives from the agriculture, fisheries, and environment sectors, academia, the private sector, and development partners. Discussions focused on the soy, sugarcane, shrimp, and crab value chains — considered both strategic for economic development and high-risk for biodiversity loss. The discussion was built on the BIODEV2030 Mozambique factsheet that call for Biodiversity Integration with Socio-economic Benefits Economic Benefits into Development. The participants had the opportunity to provide feedback on proposed reform recommendations for 24 SPPIs presented by the BIODEV2030 team.

Next steps include focus group discussions and sectoral consultations to refine the recommendations and conduct a detailed SWOT analysis, followed by bilateral meetings with anchor companies and decision-makers. The process will conclude with the presentation of a policy brief at the final workshop.
