It is primarily based on protected area data included in the UNEP-IUCN World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA). The WDPA is a joint product of UNEP and IUCN, managed by the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC) and the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) working with governments and collaborating NGOs www.wdpa.org. It also refers to some current figures held by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre on the areas of natural World Heritage Sites.
