Abstract

Stocks of sturgeono used for caviar are on the decline worldwide with some species now in danger of extinction. This situation has been caused partly by excessive fishing of sturgeon, but also by the destruction of sturgeon habitats and water pollution. Today, this situation is further exacerbated by the smuggling of sturgeon and caviar, by bartering and by related illegal activities. The alarm raised by the near extinction of certain species of sturgeon coupled with the importance that caviar plays in the economies of many a European country, led the German government to organise a workshop on the subject and how to save the falling stocks of sturgeon and ensure that they are replenished. The current publication is a summary of the proceedings of that workshop.
