Managing marine protected areas : a toolkit for the Western Indian Ocean

Abstract
With more than 70 individual sites, nationally and internationally designated, in the Western Indian Ocean, there is a growing need to ensure and improve the management effectiveness of the marine protected areas. This toolkit aims to act as a first point of call in the search for information on issues that MPA managers and practitioners face in day-to-day operations. Designed as a hands-on guide, the toolkit consists of a ring-binder of 78 theme sheets, each of which addresses a key issue, problem or situation faced by an MPA manager. Divided into two section – the management process and conservation and sustainable use – it is applicable to many areas outside of Eastern Africa as well as the 10 states of the Western Indian Ocean and seabord of Eastern Africa.
