Policy recommendations for Plastic leakage reduction in Samoa proposed

Following the conclusion of the Waste audits and consolidation of recommendations from the Quantification, Policy Analysis and Economic Assessment work, the Plastic Waste Free Islands (PWFI) project is now working on formulating proposed policy recommendations to improve the management of plastic waste in Samoa and reduce leakages from three key sectors; Waste Management, Fisheries and Tourism.

Key representatives from the three sectors were part of consultations workshops to help develop proposed Policy recommendations for Plastic leakage reduction measures from the three sectors. In-country consultant Ms. Hana Gauta of Atoa Law Firm conducted this exercise and presented the findings back to stakeholders in a final validation workshop that was held earlier this month. The main objectives of this workshop were to validate the results from the consultations that were held with key stakeholders of the three sectors in Samoa on:

1.  The policy and legal frameworks review on plastic waste management and pollution prevention relevant to Samoa

2.   The proposed policy recommendations for the reduction of leakage from the waste management, tourism and fisheries sectors in Samoa.

In 2019, with support from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), IUCN launched the Plastic Waste Free Islands (PWFI) project, as part of its global Close the Plastic Tap Programme.

Implemented in Fiji, Vanuatu and Samoa in Oceania and Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Lucia and Grenada in the Caribbean, the project seeks to promote island circular economy and to demonstrate effective, quantifiable solutions to addressing plastic leakage from Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
