Mainstreaming biodiversity in the oil, gas and alternative energy sector: good practices for biodiversity management

This side event will provide delegates with an understanding of good practices in managing biodiversity in the oil and gas and alternative energy sector. It will focus on Biodiversity Action Plans, a systematic approach to biodiversity management, conservation and enhancement that can build on, and be integrated with existing company processes throughout a project life cycle.

Nature and biodiversity loss are recognised as one of the biggest global risks to humanity. The post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework sets out an ambitious plan to implement broad-based action to bring about a transformation in society’s relationship with biodiversity, ensuring that by 2050 the shared vision of ‘living in harmony with nature’ is fulfilled. The oil and gas and renewable energy industries have a key role to play by contributing to international, national and local conservation targets and working with stakeholders and partners to develop solutions, including implementation of biodiversity no net loss (NNL) and net gain/net positive impact (NG/NPI) for their operations.

This side event will provide delegates with an understanding of good practices in managing biodiversity in the oil and gas and alternative energy sector. In particular this side event will focus on Biodiversity Action Plans, a systematic approach to biodiversity management, conservation and enhancement that can build on, and be integrated with existing company processes throughout a project life cycle.

Speakers will present and discuss:

  • Sector approach to global biodiversity trends and biodiversity mainstreaming
  • Potential biodiversity risks, impacts and opportunities management practices in the oil and gas and alternative energy sector
  • Biodiversity tools and guidance which support mainstreaming of good practice in the oil and gas and alternative energy sector
  • How Biodiversity Action Plans can help companies to deliver on biodiversity requirements, commitments, improve performance and contribute to ‘nature positive‘ aims.
  • The role that oil and gas companies can play in biodiversity protection and conservation.
  • What the implementation of the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework means for the sector: discuss implications and opportunities for the oil and gas and alternative energy (with IUCN)
