IUCN at UNCCD CRIC23
A targeted delegation will represent IUCN at the twenty-third session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 23) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), to be held in Panama City, Panama from 1 to 5 December 2025.
The CRIC will provide recommendations on achieving global targets to prevent and reverse land degradation and build drought resilience by 2030, discuss the post-2030 strategic framework, promote targeted capacity building activities, and review the effective implementation of the Convention at national, subregional, and regional levels.
In Panama, Parties will review the implementation of voluntary land degradation neutrality targets, as well as related efforts to follow up on policy frameworks identified at COP16 in December 2024, including those pertaining to land tenure, gender, and sand and dust storms. They will also consider priorities in science-policy guidance and provide feedback on the development of the third edition of the Global Land Outlook, being prepared by the Science-Policy Interface, of which IUCN is an observer.
Building on the outcomes of the World Conservation Congress 2025, IUCN will actively engage in the official proceedings of the CRIC, as well as lead and support a number of side events. In addition to calling for integrated and inclusive action on sustainable land and water management, proactive drought management, and rangeland and grassland governance to enhance the implementation of the Convention, it will reinforce the need for strengthening synergetic action – at all levels – to combat the interlinked crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation.
