Walter Zoo Gossau
Founded in 1961 as a small zoo, Walter Zoo grew to be a scientific (EAZA and WAZA member) zoo-based non-profit conservation organisation annually visited by about 290,000 people. The area of 10 ha is home to around 900 animals of 100 different species. By collecting a conservation fee, Walter Zoo provides substantial funding for different conservation projects. Further, Walter Zoo participates in more than 20 EAZA Ex-situ programs and welcomes more than 10’000 people to its environmental education programs. The zoo runs two rescue and rehabilitation centres for native wild animals (birds and hedgehogs) and thus also takes responsibility for the protection of native wildlife.
