Instituto de Desenvolvimento Sustentável Mamirauá
The Mamirauá Institute is a Brazilian Social Organization supported and supervised by the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, acting as one of its research units in the Amazon. The focus of the Institute is placed on the flooded forests of the Amazon, particularly várzeas, since these are the most pressured and threatened ecosystems in the Amazon Biome. The Institute has distinguished itself by implementing a set of actions of applied scientific research in the conservation of Amazonian biodiversity, the sustainable use of this biodiversity, and thereby improving the quality of life of local populations associated with this biodiversity. Researchers and technicians of the Institute develop processes and technologies for social involvement of traditional populations in participatory management activities in protected areas and sustainable management of natural resources of greater economic importance.
