Dr Keiya NAKAJIMA
Executive Director of The Japan Falconiformes Center (JFC, Nihon Washitaka Kenkyu Center in Japanese) that was established in 1982 for the conservation of wild raptor species in Japan and the preservation of traditional Japanese falconry. Falconry is traditional hunting art that trained raptor is used to catch quarry. Basic policy of traditional Japanese falconry was sustainable use of wild raptors in the old days, and the skill is useful to manage live raptors at present. JFC applies falconry knowledge to the release program for wild raptors that were recovered from injury. JFC carries out field research for decades to conserve habitat of endangered raptors. The knowledge is provided to the conservation plan in the land development project.

Medical Doctor specialising in Family Medicine. Member of the Executive on the Board of the International Association for Falconry and the Conservation of Birds of Prey (IAF) for 20 years, having served as President of the organization for 6 years and currently as Executive Secretary. The IAF promotes conservation through sustainable use and has membership representation from 90 countries around the world. The IAF and IUCN share a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate and promote raptor conservation and have collaborated on developing 3 multilingual interactive portals as listed below. The SUME Thematic Group is the IUCN Contact Point for this MoU. Our collaboration has promoted the conservation of raptors, and biodiversity in general, addressing ecosystem challenges including mass electrocution of raptors through unsafe electrical infrastructure and loss of biodiversity through agricultural practices.

Objectives:
- Identify how sustainable use of renewable natural resources can contribute to management and restoration of ecosystems.
- Identify and document the role ecosystem management plays in sustaining the use of renewable natural resources.
- Identify and promote conservation advantages accruing to flora, mycota and fauna from more effective ecosystem management.
- Facilitate research and knowledge sharing that explores how sustainable use of renewable natural resources can foster more resilient ecosystems.
Projects and Initiatives
Our flagship activity is the development of multilingual networking, notably through the portal Naturalliance (http://www.naturalliance.org). This is now available in 42 languages and has 52 national and regional sites. Additional languages and sites will be provided to the portal and new functions will be established.
We are also engaged in the development of networks with other organizations. The following portals are developed in partnership with CMS/UNEP, BirdLife International and IAF.
Sakers and Falconry (http://www.sakernet.org)
Farmland favouring Partridges (http://www.perdixnet.org)
Falconry and Conservation (http://www.falconet.org)
We plan also to establish a portal framework which will host representative sites for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLC) groups with 10 active sites for demonstration and promotion at the 2024 IUCN WCC.
This work will implement the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for which SUME is the contact point between IUCN-CEM and other organizations. SUME is supported for this work by the European Sustainable Use Group. More detailed information can be found on their site (http://esug.sycl.net).
More details of SUME meetings and other activities can be found on http://sume.sycl.net
