The Green Belt Movement
The Green Belt Movement (GBM), founded in 1977 by Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai, empowers Kenyan communities to restore the environment and improve livelihoods. Its three pillars are: **Tree Planting** (over 51 million trees to combat degradation and climate change); Capacity Building (training women and youth in sustainable practices and livelihoods); and Advocacy (influencing policy for environmental rights and protection). GBM’s holistic, community-driven model promotes sustainable development, biodiversity, and social justice.
