Mr Juan HERRERO
Juan HERRERO (Rome, Italy). Associate Professor at the University of Saragossa, Spain, where he teaches Ecology and related subjects as Wildlife, Environmental Education and Protected Areas. His field of expertise is wildlife ecology and management and focuses on large mammals. He is deeply involved in long term monitoring of Pyrenean chamois, Iberian wild goat, wild boar and red deer in mountain environments and collaborates in advisory boards of Game Reserves. Currently he is the co-chair of the Caprinae Specialist Group of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Dr Yash Veer BHATNAGAR
I work in the Nature Conservation Foundation as a Senior Scientist, and am fascinated by the 'mountain monarchs' of Eurasia. I have been working on their ecology and integrated conservation over large landscapes in the Himalaya and Central Asia for about three decades. I am also the Co-Chair of IUCNs Caprinae Specialist Group.

More about the Specialist Group
CSG is composed of a network of volunteer experts working on the ecology, behavior, taxonomy, conservation and management of wild Caprinae (wild sheep, goats, goats-antelopes, muskox and allies) from around the world.
We plan to increase connections between stakeholders and specialists on Caprinae conservation. We plan to inform both Caprinae Specialist Group (CSG) members and other interested people about the results of relevant research, management and conservation initiatives through our revived newsletter Caprinae News. One topic several of us have been working on is the consequences of current climatic changes on the distribution and numbers of mountain-dwelling herbivores, especially wild sheep, goats and goat-antelopes. Furthermore, several of us have been working on the evolutionary effects of trophy hunting on the hunted populations and several papers on this very important, controversial issue will be published. New and ongoing conservation initiatives will be furthered. The 7th World Mountain Ungulate Conference will be organized in Bozeman (Montana, US) in September 2019 and the Caprinae Specialist Group will cooperate in its organization.
Mission
We aim to promote the conservation of Caprinae and their habitat, promote research on all aspects of Caprinae biology, including the conservation of mountain ecosystems, and provide advice on the biology and conservation of Caprinae to governments, NGOs and researchers.
Specialist Group work
Promotion, participation and endorsement of actions to improve the status of Caprinae species as well as their habitat conditions, in balance with coexisting natural predators.
Understanding the threat to Caprinaes
Promoting information exchange through international contacts of specialists, interest groups and agencies dedicated to the conservation of wild Caprinae.
Caprinae on the IUCN Red List
CSG assesses species for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species to inform conservation efforts.
