Dr David OBURA
David Obura chairs the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), is on the Earth Commission and is a Founding Director of the Kenyan coral reef research and conservation organization CORDIO East Africa. David has 30 years of experience researching coral reefs, their vulnerability to climate change and importance to coastal communities and economies, and highlighting these issues across local to global scales. To motivate the societal changes needed, he is pivoting to a new focus on sustainability and equity, linking challenges and solutions across scales, and working with diverse teams to identify pathways to a safe and just world for present and future generations.

More about the Specialist Group
Under the Species Survival Commission of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Coral Specialist Group (CSG) assembles experts in coral science, conservation and management. Coral reefs are a diverse group of ecosystems that are vital in so many ways to humans. Knowing that climate change and human uses will threaten their very existence, the group has developed a broad ecosystem and conservation focus. We are able to provide informed society and policy makers with the information they need to take science-based action.
Specialist Group work
We aim to update the Red List of Threatened Corals and the coral Red List Index. This is in order to contribute to policy and decision-making processes that culminate in 2020 with major global events relevant to coral reefs and to align the actions of diverse coral reef stakeholders.
CSG on the IUCN Red List
To inform conservation efforts, CSG assesses species for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
