The DSG works closely with Wetlands International, who coordinate the monitoring of many duck populations, the IUCN SSC Threatened Waterfowl Specialist Group, whose focus includes globally threatened duck species, the Waterbird Harvest Specialist Group - Wetlands International, whose work includes issues related to the sustainable harvest of ducks, and the IUCN SSC Species Monitoring Specialist Group, who work to stimulate and support biodiversity monitoring by all taxonomic Specialist Groups.

Our members provide technical knowledge and data to support a number of different status assessments, particularly the IUCN Red List and Waterbird Population Estimates. We also assist with the moderation of discussions relating to ducks on BirdLife International’s Globally Threatened Bird Forum.

A key role of the DSG is to support the identification of new conservation priorities and emerging conservation issues, and respond accordingly, e.g. by undertaking more detailed assessments or supporting members and others to develop relevant projects.

The DSG works to generate and disseminate knowledge and best practices between members and others with an interest in duck conservation and management and to ensure priority issues for duck conservation are identified and addressed.
