Dr Mike VAN KEULEN
Associate Professor Mike van Keulen is a marine ecologist with a broad range of interests including marine plant ecology and physiology, coral reef ecology and biological hydrodynamics. He has research experience and expertise in physiology and ecology of marine plants and algae, hydrodynamics of seagrass ecosystems, seagrass rehabilitation. He also has interests in ecology and interactions of coral reef organisms. As well as his expertise in marine plants, Dr van Keulen has research collaborations in a broad range of tropical and temperate marine topics, including invertebrate and vertebrate biology and wildlife ecology. His research has focused on Perth metropolitan coastal waters, Ningaloo Reef and SE Asia. Dr van Keulen is currently Associate Professor in Plant Sciences & Marine Biology at Murdoch University as well as Director of the Coral Bay Research Station, which also operates out of Murdoch.
More about the Specialist Group
The goal of the group is to protect seagrass species biodiversity worldwide and to preserve the functions and values of seagrass habitat, including its role in protecting threatened and endangered species that depend on seagrasses for their survival.
The IUCN SSC Seagrass Specialist Group (SSG) contributes to and encourages seagrass science and conservation, with the goal of protecting seagrass species biodiversity worldwide and preserving the functions and values of seagrass habitat, including its role in protecting threatened and endangered species that depend on seagrasses for their survival.
Specialist Group work
The SSSG is comprised of approximately 70 seagrass biologists worldwide, who have volunteered to participate and contribute their time by reviewing the status of seagrasses in their bioregions and contributing their knowledge.
SSSG on the IUCN Red List
To inform conservation efforts, SSSG assesses species for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
