More about the Specialist Group
The IUCN SSC Small Carnivore Specialist Group (SCSG) has more than 90 members whose specialisms include ex-situ conservation, small carnivore ecology, and mammal watching, amongst many others. The group is diverse, recognising the range of people and professions that need to be engaged if conservation is to work. A main guiding principle of the group is to provide support to young conservationists working in the Global South. This is mainly done through the ...
The IUCN SSC Small Carnivore Specialist Group (SCSG) works to protect, conserve, and understand 150 extant species of small carnivores around the world.
Specialist Group work
SCSG builds capacity among small carnivore researchers and conservationists, provides a venue to publish new knowledge, and maintains the most up-to-date Red List status assessment for the species.
Understanding threats to Small Carnivores
Some small Carnivores face both known and emerging threats. SCSG clarifies these threats at local and global levels and communicates to the world that while the assemblage as a whole is not particularly threatened, a few of the species are among the most threatened mammals in the world and are in urgent need of greatly expanded conservation efforts.
SCSG on the IUCN Red List
SCSG assesses species for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species to inform conservation efforts.
