South Africa has exceptional biodiversity, characterized by high species richness, high levels of endemism, a wide variety of ecosystems, and is a corridor for key migratory species. It is identified as one of the world’s 17 megadiverse nations. South Africa ranks as one of the top ten nations globally for plant species richness and third for marine species endemism. The purpose of the South Africa Species Specialist Group (ZaSSG) will be to coordinate expertise across taxonomic groups and disciplines to support the government, facilitate evidence-based decision-making and the development of policies that will contribute towards reversing the decline of species. The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), a government agency, will host and lead the activities of this group
