NACRES is a non-governmental, not for profit organisation that was founded in 1989. Its mission is to safeguard the biodiversity of Georgia and the South Caucasus, through conservation activities at national and local levels, based on sound science, sustainability principles and local participation NACRES was first established as a group of enthusiasts in 1989 that was registered as NGO in 1991 under its first name Noah’s Ark Centre for the Recovery of Endangered Species (NACRES). It was later renamed as “Centre for Biodiversity Research and Conservation” while retaining its original acronym NACRES. Target species / habitats covered by the organization NACRES species conservation and research activities have focused on rare and endangered mammals and also on those involved in human-wildlife conflict including such ungulates as wild goat (Capra aegagrus), tur (Capra cylindricornis and C. caucasica), red dear (Cervus elaphus), goitered gazelle (Gazella subguturossa) as well as carnivores: wolf (Canis lupus), brown bear (Ursus arctos), striped hyena (Hyaena hyanea), leopard (Panthera pardus), and otter (Lutra lutra). Main habitats covered include: alpine and subalpine areas, mountain and flood plain forests, arid light woodlands and scrub, steppes and semi-deserts, inland waters (rivers, lakes).
