Fundação Museu do Homem Americano

Four decades ago, archaeologists discovered in southeastern Piauí, a heritage that, until now, has not been fully discovered. Each year, the research, which since 1992 are seamless, allow the discovery of new archaeological sites, new species of animals, plants and geological monuments of great beauty. Initially financed by France, these surveys also receive, from the 1990s, financing of the Brazilian federal government. In 1978, after months of fieldwork, the researchers sent to Brasilia a report showing the region's importance, not only for understanding the prehistory of Brazil, but also for the preservation of the savanna and a well maintained environment. The federal government in 1979 created the Serra da Capivara National Park, but no official has been appointed to deal with the conservation unit and were not allocated resources for their protection. In 1991, UNESCO declared the Serra da Capivara Cultural Heritage and, thereafter, the Fumdham at the request of the federal government assumed responsibility to protect and maintain this heritage. During those years, the Fumdham managed to maintain the infrastructure built in the park to allow the development of tourism, fauna protection and especially the protection and conservation of sites with rock art.
