IITC's has over 100 affiliates from North Central, South America, the Pacific, Arctic and Caribbean, where most IITC’s activities are carried out. Many of IITC’s affiliates are themselves large networks or confederations representing dozens or even hundreds of communities, Tribes and organizations.In keeping with IITC's commitment to Indigenous self-determination, all Board, employees and program consultants in representative roles are members of Indigenous communities. In 2011 IITC was the first Indigenous organization in history to be upgraded to “General Consultative Status” by ECOSOC in recognition of its 4 decades of work for Indigenous Peoples in UN bodies and processes addressing human rights, sustainable development, environment, bio-diversity, health, culture, traditional knowledge, food sovereignty and climate change.
