States have committed to ensure the protection of rivers, coastal and marine ecosystems, recognising their connectivity as a continuum in many global and regional regulatory frameworks, while progressively developing and adopting plans, policies and laws to control, prevent and reduce plastic pollution on a national and local level.

In this context, this briefing focuses on the Source-to-Sea approach given the fact that this approach not only consider the interconnectedness between the physical ecosystem elements of a basin, but also the mutual interdependencies between the different stakeholders that live and depend on their resources, as well as the various environmental, social, economic and political dynamics among them.
