IUCN position paper for UNFCCC COP30

UNFCCC COP30, which marks the 10th anniversary of the historic Paris Agreement, takes place at a time of growing conflicts, mounting geopolitical tensions, and heightened strains on multilateralism. As Parties convene in Belém, Brazil – in the heart of the Amazon – they must redouble their efforts to safeguard the multilateral climate process and reinforce respect for the rules-based international order. As the landmark advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) makes it clear, all States have binding obligations under international law to protect the global climate system and limit global warming to 1.5°C.
