Meet Eko-svest, new IUCN Member in North Macedonia
The Center for Environmental Research and Information, Eko-svest, is committed to promoting environmental responsibility and sustainability and works to inspire meaningful action through education, advocacy, and community engagement. We wish them a warm welcome to IUCN!
“Joining IUCN connects us to a global network of conservation organisations and experts, providing access to technical support, training, and resources that will strengthen our initiatives,” says Darko Kjitanoski from Eko-svest. "This membership also allows us to influence conservation policies at both global and local levels, increasing our advocacy reach and visibility. Our decision to join IUCN reflects our deep commitment to conservation and our eagerness to learn from others, gain fresh perspectives, and expand our capacity to tackle environmental challenges."
For over 22 years and with a track record of over 85 implemented projects and numerous reports and policy documents, Eko-svest has been raising public awareness on pressing topics like climate change, nature protection, and water conservation, reaching more than 300,000 citizens. These efforts have inspired eco-friendly practices and informed policies that promote sustainability.
Eko-svest is active across several key domains, including nature and water protection, climate action, renewable energy, and active citizenship. The organisation empowers individuals and communities to adopt sustainable practices through campaigns, educational videos, workshops, and public outreach. By highlighting the environmental and social impacts of harmful activities, Eko-svest advocates for healthier, more sustainable solutions and actively represents these in policymaking processes.
Research and analysis are central to Eko-svest’s work, focusing on the intersection of environmental protection and human health. The organization supports public participation in environmental decision-making and assists communities in exercising this right. Additionally, Eko-svest facilitates collaboration through coalitions such as the Climate Coalition, bringing together organisations, experts, and institutions to tackle environmental challenges.
Eko-svest, founded in 2002 in Skopje, North Macedonia, has a local office in Vevchani that spearheads a variety of environmental and conservation initiatives. This office serves as a center for education and advocacy, hosting seminars, activities, and community-driven projects designed to promote environmental responsibility and enhance the quality of life in the local community.
