The Environment & Resources Authority (ERA) is the newly formed national Authority responsible for environmental regulation in Malta. Established under the mandate of the Environment Protection Act (Act I of 2016 of the Laws of Malta), ERA is also responsible for the implementation of a variety of Directives, Decisions and Regulations under the EU Environmental Acquis. In addition, ERA acts as the national focal point under a number of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), including, amongst others, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and its Protocols; the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats (Bern Convention); the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS/Bonn Convention) and its relevant Agreements; and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The Authority employs around 100 personnel from a wide range of backgrounds to help solve and shape our country's environmental issues.
