Overview and description

Introduction

The IUCN WCEL Climate Change Law Specialist Group (CCLSG) is a global network of legal practitioners and scholars in the field of “climate change law”. The CCLSG is the principal source of legal technical advice to the IUCN, its members, and the WCEL on the legal aspects of addressing climate change and its adverse impacts internationally and nationally.

With 400+ members, the CCLSG brings together experts from all continents and different legal cultures and backgrounds.

The CCLSG interacts, collaborates, and coordinates with other IUCN Commissions, WCEL Specialist Groups and the IUCN Secretariat with respect to legal issues relevant to climate change.

Prof Francesco SINDICO

Francesco Sindico is a Professor of International Environmental Law at the University of Strathclyde Law School in Glasgow, Scotland. He is the Co-Cahir of the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law Climate Change Law Specialist Group. He is also the Founder and Director of the Climate Change Legal Initiative (C2LI) and is an elected member of the Executive Board of the International Water Resources Association (IWRA) where he co-leads a Task Force on Islands and Water. Francesco has been Counsel for IUCN at the ICJ Climate Change Advisory Opinion proceedings and is currently leading IUCN's efforts before the African Court of Human and People's Rights climate change advisory opinion. He was also Counsel for the Plurinational State of Bolivia in the Silala case before the ICJ. Francesco has been seconded to the Scottish Government where he led the Carbon Neutral Islands project. He is the author of two edited collections on climate change litigation and a monograph on international law and transboundary aquifers.

Dr Fabiano DE ANDRADE CORREA

Fabiano is an international lawyer with extensive experience working with different intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, with a particular focus on climate change, environmental law and policy, and sustainable development.

Currently, Fabiano serves as Senior Counsel with the World Bank's International and Environmental Law Unit. Fabiano also volunteers as Lead Counsel with the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL)’s Peace, Justice and Governance Programmes (SDG16). 

Fabiano holds a Ph.D in Law and LL.M. from the European University Institute (EUI, Italy); a Master in Diplomacy and International Relations (Diplomatic School of Madrid / Universidad Complutense); and a Bachelor of Laws, with specialization in International Law (LL.B (Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). He is a guest lecturer in different universities in Brazil and in Italy, and has published extensively on international law and sustainable development topics; and qualified lawyer in Brazil (OAB). He is fluent in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian, and has working knowledge of French and German.
