AlUla Protected Areas Network (APAN)

The APAN project in AlUla, Saudi Arabia, aims to establish a network of protected areas governed by IUCN standards. It supports Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 by enhancing governance and management effectiveness, delivering ecological and community benefits.

Project Components/Activities:

  • Establishing a legal framework for diverse governance and management of protected and conserved areas
  • Designing the AlUla Protected Areas Network and executing ecosystem rehabilitation initiatives
  • Implementing technology solutions for conservation, including biodiversity information systems
  • Capacity building, effective management, and strategic planning for AlUla’s protected areas
  • Supporting species reintroductions and community engagement initiatives

Key Achievements/Outcomes:

  • Developed biodiversity and gender action plans specific to AlUla
  • Organized participatory 3D modeling workshops and hosted the Tech4Nature Summit to showcase scalable conservation technologies
  • Finalized management plans and completed Green List dossiers for all six protected areas in AlUla
